In fact, it’s the interplay of surfaces like the engine cover, rear flanks, and bumper that gives the 720S’ rear more character than the front. Hinged at the front, it also pivots upward to act as an airbrake. The rear spoiler sits flush with the bodywork and is deployed for more downforce. The sides have no cooling ducts they’ve been moved to near the engine bay to feed the intercoolers. But to keep the shape clean and uncluttered, McLaren’s designers have tucked these bits away. McLaren 720S: Exterior designįor a car developing 720hp (hence the name 720S), you would expect the bodywork to be replete with heat dissipating and downforce-generating ducts, spoilers and aero appendages. Just the kind of reaction Ferrari must dread. However, the paperwork is quite a hassle, which is why not many bother, but Adar, a long-time Ferrari owner, couldn’t wait for something he saw as refreshingly different. Not many know that for cars with petrol engines more than 3.0 litres and costing over USD 40,000, you don’t have to go through the same hoops of regulatory approvals that otherwise are a barrier to import cars from lesser categories. In fact, Adar fell in love with the 720S the moment he saw it in a London showroom and had one shipped to India. This car we’ve driven has been kindly loaned to us by Adar Poonawalla, CEO of the Serum Institute of India, and a serious car enthusiast. It’s this very car that is giving Ferrari nightmares as it strikes straight at its heart, which is the bread-and-butter F8 Tributo. Yes, that’s the edge arch rival Ferrari has always had, but, of late, McLaren is winning hearts on the sheer strengths of performance, design, and technology that is best embodied in the 720S. Where the British specialist sportscar maker has typically struggled is to deliver stupendous performance with an equal amount of emotion and drama. On the other hand, the 720S Spider competes against the Lamborghini Huracán Evo Spyder RWD and Ferrari F8 Spider.Making a high-performance sportscar that can deliver an astounding set of figures is actually the easy part for McLaren. The 720S Coupé takes on legends such as the Ferrari F8 Tributo and Lamborghini Huracán Evo RWD. However, there are a plethora of shades available in McLaren’s colour palette. The twins are offered in six standard paint choices. The 720S Coupé and Spider can accommodate two passengers, including the driver. The McLaren automobiles are about driving and hence they are equipped with performance-oriented features such as foldable driver display, static adaptive headlights, variable drift control, McLaren track telemetry and carbon-ceramic brakes with aluminium callipers. McLaren offers full leather or Alcantara upholstered sports seats in the car. However, there is a portrait-shaped infotainment screen with navigation and also a unique digital instrument cluster. The 720S Spider features a retractable hardtop and being a driver-oriented car, it does not have large screens or a plethora of switches inside. And the 720S lineup ardently follows this deep philosophy. McLaren is well-known for making superior driver-focused sports cars and therefore do not have any luxury features or an opulent interior for that matter. At the back, there is a power-assisted spoiler that not only increases downforce but also acts as an air brake to provide additional stopping force. The air swiftly travels via a sophisticated air bridge created inside the body to ultimately cool the V8 mill. Moreover, the triangular-shaped headlamp unit doubles up as air inlets. The 720S twins utilise McLaren's signature carbon fibre monocoque tub called “Monocage II and Monocage II-S” which is as light as a feather. This two-door automobile is very low slung due to its always-on race character. The 720S is a masterpiece of impeccable aerodynamic design, and that makes it a space-age supercar. All that power propels the 720S twins from 0 to 100kmph in a staggering 2.9 seconds and has a phenomenal top speed of 341kmph. This mid-mounted mill develops an exhilarating 710bhp and 770Nm of torque. It is available in two body styles - the 720S Coupé and the 720S Spider.īoth the 720S automobiles are powered by an M840T 3,994cc twin-turbocharged V8 petrol mill married to a seven-speed automatic transmission. McLaren launched the 720S in the country on 9 June 2021.
